I feel Gretal...or Heidi

2 Saturdays ago, Mom and I attempted to go the monthly flea market. However, is was seriously pouring down rain, so we went to 2 Antique Malls near there.  Springfield, OH is seriously like the hubbub of Antiquing.  However, when we were at the first antique mall, the electricity went out in the whole area, so that meant no more shopping.  I did find a lot of neat things for my shop, that will be featured in another blog post coming soon.  I decided to wear my pair of WWII Navy pants that fit like a dream.  I also wore a top that I made out of fabric from the 40's.  I reall like the versatility of the shirt because its casual but can also be dressy.  I've seen people wear their hair like this, but never tried it before, and let me tell you, I really really love it.  It is so quick to do and I think it is really complimentary on a lot of different types of faces.  I do feel like Heidi or Gretal, though, haha.  Since my hair is so short though, I have to do it differently than how people probably normally do it.  I make two really high pigtails and leave the ponytails in while I braid them.  Then I take out the pigtail ponytail and pin the braids up with about 6 or 8 bobbypins.  Does that make sense.  In my head it does, but I never know how it sounds to other people haha.

Easter Musical 2011

At the beginning of April, my church produced an Easter Musical.  I always think our choir director picks out the prettiest musicals for us to sing and play in.  I play the oboe in our church orchestra, though, so I was playing instead of singing.  Sometimes I wish I could do both at the same time.  Wouldn't that be awesome if you could do that.... er.... maybe I'm the only one that thinks about impossible things like that, but I really truly do.  I love to sing, but I also love to play, and well since I'm the only one at church that plays the oboe, I'm always stuck in the dang orchestra, not that I mind :D  And while we're on the subject of complaining, why must "professionals" always wear black?  It's such a boring dark color.  Seriously.  How awesome would it be if a choir suddenly decided to wear all bright colors.  Can you imagine how cheery and happy the place would be?  I'm just saying.

Sanctus Real

I have been working on  this darn dress for almost 2 weeks now.  Jeesh.  I never take that long on anything.  It wasn't particularly hard or difficult to follow, I just never found time to really devote to the poor thing.  But, it finally got finished and I have to say, I feel like a school girl in it.  I like it, don't get me wrong, but doesn't it sort of have that uniform feel?  Anyways its a flannel plaid, so it is super warm and there are a lot of simple details in it that I like.

I decided to be different today and wore a flower headband instead of a hat.  It felt strange.

It has three darts in the sleeve.  I really like the look of this feature, and it makes the dress seem more tailored.

I'm not sure how I feel about the blue for the belt, especially with the brown buttons.  However, I always have this problem of running out of fabric before I get around to cutting out the belt.  So I have to make do with other fabrics.  The belt may change. 

In other exciting news, I went to a Sanctus Real concert tonight.  That was cool.  It was a free concert at a church close to me.  I hardcore love Sanctus Real.  Even though it was a venue geared more towards teens, there were still some adults there.  It reminded me slightly of Acquire the Fire, which probably no one has a clue what I'm talking about, but it takes place in Cleveland over a weekend once a year.  They get big name Christian bands and speakers that perform and speak throughout each day.  It is geared towards teens and getting them to renew their faith/setting their faith on fire, so to speak.  It was one of the things that I actually took part in in high school which was pretty big for me because I never joined in on things like youth group, Bible studies etc.  Anyways tonight, Sanctus Real kicked things off by singing a few of their rockier songs.  Then a speaker spoke on the topic of being refreshed.  How God refreshes us and nurtures us, not the world.  Not worldly things.  That probably a really crummy recap of what he said, but there ya go.  After he spoke, Sanctus Real came back out and sang some of there more worshipful songs, included Lead Me, my favorite new song of theirs.  They put on a totally rockin' concert.

And lastly, just what I needed was another thing to run and waste my time on, but I have a tumblr now (I Wander at the Wonderfalls). yippee.  But, I am using it to post things about movies and tv shows and books, etc.  that I like.  So don't expect a bunch of vintage pictures to show because they won't other than a guest appearance.  But, if you like things like Joss Whedon shows, Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, Doctor Who, etc.  you should check it out.  Its cool.

And now I'm off to watch an episode of Tom Baker Doctor Who.

Fingerwaves Attempt

These past few weeks, my mom and I have been marathoning Wind at My Back (5 seasons).  Have you seen this darling show?  It was produced and created by Sullivan Entertainment, who also created Avonlea (7 seasons).  Avonlea was one of my very favorite shows growing up. It was on the Disney channel back when it actually had quality family entertainment and took place in the 1900's.  Wind at My Back takes places in the early 1930's and tells the story of the charming townspeople in Canada.  I am going to do a post on this show later on today or tomorrow, so I won't go into too much detail about it, but suffice it to say I have officially fallen in love with everything about the 1930's.

I was a little hesitant about the clothes, the hair, etc. but now it is a full on love affair.  So, I got my hair cut a few inches and attempted to do fingerwaves for the second time last night.

I am pretty happy with the results.  I only used a bit of setting lotion on top of my soaking wet hair, and the rest of my hair I pin curled.

It took me a few goes to get it right, but after about the 2nd time I was happy with how it looked.

I think I might do a video tutorial after I practice it a few more times if anyone is interested.  I think it is so much more easier to figure out how to do it from a video than book instructions. 

 

The dress I found at an Antique Mall a few weeks ago.  I believe it is a 1930's dress- it has a side button closure.  I absolutely adore the lace.  It was a whopping $10.  See- sometimes you can find a good deal at Antique stores.

I also have planned my winter sewing wardrobe.  Here's about half of the things I plan to sew:

Has anyone ever sewed with fur?  Do you see the tiny bit of fur around the wrist?  I think it would be gorgeous with the color fabric I chose, but I really am unsure of how to go about sewing with fur.

I also have been making Limoncello the past couple of days.  It takes a few weeks to make it properly (actually, it takes a month if you want to do it really properly).

Basically you buy 1 thing of Vodka- I chose Smirnoffs 100 proof and 10 lemons.

Then you peel off the skin of the lemon with a vegetable peeler without getting the white stuff(pith).  This will take you awhile.

If you like lemons you could make lemonade or something else with the remaining part of the lemons.  The skin is the only part that goes in the Limoncello.

Then you pour the vodka into a container and put the lemon rinds in.  Cover the top with saran wrap and a rubber band.  I let mine steep for 4 days. 

On the 4th day, I put in 2 vanilla beans- Split it open and scoop out the seeds.  I just dropped it into the container and then whisked it up a little to separate the vanilla beans a bit.

That is where I am in the process of making the limoncello.  I am going to let it steep for the next week and continue the recipe next Sunday.

One last thing.  This Friday there is an amazing estate sale that I am going to go to, but so far I have found no one to go with.  I am still trying to convince my best friend to go with me, but if she cant and I have to go alone, does anyone know if it is acceptable to bring large plastic bags with you or something or the sort to put everything in that you want?  There are a lot of hats with hatboxes that I am determined to get, but am unsure of how to carry them out without having to put them down and risk losing them.

Okay, now I am going to work on my Wind at My Back Fashion Post.

40's Suit and Some More Doctor Who Pumpkin Pics

Today I sang Revelation Song at all three services in church.  I first learned this song at College because we sang it all the time during our daily chapel services.

I  just think it such a beautiful and truly powerful song.  But of course, my allergies had to attack me all weekend long, so I sang with a very stuffed up nose. Attractive.  I wish I could just karate chop my allergies right out of my body...but I have yet to be blessed with those super abilities.

This is the same 1940's suit I wore to the annual meeting/party that took place last Tuesday.  I found this at the flea market for $10 because it was missing buttons, which was a super duper easy fix. I'm not really sure what type of fabric it is, but it has a very nice feel and quality to it.  The fabric is a very very thin white and grey line design.  And yes, my shoes are plum.  It felt so boring to wear a grey suit and black hat, that I wanted a pop of color.

It was weird at church today, though, and I don't know if its because I was singing so more people saw me or what, but I kept getting asked why I was so dressed up.  And really...do I need a reason to look nice?  I mean I always wear something nice to church, (and on most days except for at work) and this was no nicer than usual, but it was just so weird.  It felt like people were  accusing me of something horrid lol.  I know they weren't, but it just felt so odd. I think church has become almost too casual for me (in my opinion), and some people like that, and that's fine, but I always feel like the least I can do is look nice and proper for someone who died for me. 

I did feel like a kid magnet though.  Kids for some reason (probably because of me teaching little kiddies Sunday School) were popping up out of nowhere today to give me hugs and tell me they liked my outfit.  Well, at least we know the little people have a sense of fashion :D

Oh, and I got some cool pictures of my pumpkins lit at night.  The David Tennant one didn't come out too great, but the cyberman and Matt Smith came out fabulously.  Hopefully tonight I can get some better ones of all three.

See what I mean.  I think the poor Doctor's candle was not lit proper, or had too much wax in it or something.  That must be fixed!  Though the sky was beautiful!
